Hello! I guess I'm doing a once or twice a week blog now that I'm back at school. Happy labor day weekend! **Side note, I wrote this and called it memorial day weekend... all I know is that it's a 3 day, sorry!
I've now had two full weeks of sailing practice and I can honestly say that it's the best part of my day. We had a whole range of conditions this week from no wind to medium wind to thunderstorms. It's definitely going to be tough to keep up the good attitude as far as practicing without any regattas goes but we should be good. Madeline (my team captain) is doing a really good job of keeping us motivated and coming up with fun things for the team to do!
This past week I ran a lot... Like 35 miles throughout the whole week. I guess my runs just accumulated I'm not really sure. Yesterday all around the yard there was a "20 mile walk/run/bike/relay for Suicide Awareness." I will start this off by saying that I ambitiously thought I could run 20 miles. However, Fiona's roommate ran 7 in the morning so she said that all Fi had to run was 13 and we'd complete the 20 mile relay. We ran 13.1, a half marathon. Neither one of us had done it before and I'm honestly very proud of us. I also don't hurt as badly as I thought I would. It wasn't fast but now I know what to expect and I know I could do it again for time. I think I'll do some yoga and stretch though, I really need to. Afterwards we ate Buffalo Wild Wings that Madeline's dad ordered for us, it was really yummy.
Yesterday morning all of the girls in my class in my company had breakfast together! It was really nice to just sit chat and eat. We ordered Miss Shirley's and it was super yummy. We've agreed to continue to do that and hopefully one day soon we'll be able to actually go to the real restaurant and not just order it to the gate.
Yesterday afternoon (yester-noon?) Madeline and I tanned on Hospital Point for ~2.5 hours. We're now allowed to tan in bathing suits, that's the new big deal. It was nice, it was a really beautiful day yesterday. There was no humidity and there was a great breeze. It was the kind of weather that you could sit outside all day and not even realize that you could've been getting sunburned. That last sentence was something my dad would say.
Today I'm going to finish my blog, do some homework and meet my mom who's bringing me groceries and breakfast and then I guess I'll probably go out to Hospital Point with Madeline again and whoever else wants to join us. I think we're going to try and convince our teammates to play some board games with us.
So we stand watch here at the Naval Academy. It's to prepare us for the watch that we'll have to stand in the big navy. Before this year we just had to stand CMOD (company mate of the deck) where you just walk around on your floor and make sure that there aren't any intruders and we also stood Main Office watch which is where you just answer the phones, it's normally fairly uneventful. Now they've added a whole host of watches, one of them being Meal Watch. Now let me tell you, this watch is quite uh useless. I've now stood it three times, twice during breakfast and once during dinner. My three different jobs have been: boxed meal passer outer, hand sanitizer, and orange juice cup filler upper. I understand that we're trying to eliminate the amount of grimy midshipmen hands touching things but by me touching your boxed lunch and handing it to you I'm adding a hand!! It's alright, I can't really complain anymore because I'm done but it was truly a nuisance.
Another thing along the line of complaints: my AC vent drips. When Katherine and I first moved into our room we noticed there was a little tiny puddle on the floor. We figured out that it was coming from our AC vent and put a little bucket underneath. We told the mid who's in our company who's job it is to communicate with the repair people that we needed our AC vent fixed because it's annoying to constantly have to move the bucket around. During the first week a repairman came to our room fiddled around with the AC for what felt like a very short amount of time and then left. We were relieved that he was able to fix it so quickly until we realized that he actually didn't do anything. I've now complained two more times but here we are, being succumbed to Bancroft water torture.
I don't really think I have anything else right now but I hope everyone had a good week!
